Carbon capture and storage - one of the most important engineering challenges

While the world has been recovering from the current recision there are very good companies that have technologies that could have an impact on reducing the carbon footprint. I personally have been in meetings that have taken me from bio-remediation to wind powered power generation companies trying to get their concepts off the ground.

The fact is that there is good technologies that when applied will have a positive net affect on reducing the amount of carbon waste we produce. The problem that these companies have to overcome is 2 fold.

1. The first issue is that getting the funds to build out their technology to become marketable is tough in the current conditions. In order for these companies to get enough capital to bring their concepts to being a viable product has challenges. A company has to navigate through shark invested waters. From brokers who over promise and under produce to the other good companies presenting to the same funding companies. This task can be very daunting. It worries me that the solution to the global problems may be left undone because of this issue.

2. Lack of business intelligence. Most of the time these technologies that are created to solve these issues are created by a very specialized individual. We can call them inventors. The typical inventor has a specific personality profile that allows them to think in ways that they can solve very important issues. The challenge is that this personality profile while good at somethings falls short in other areas. In order for us to bring these techologies to market in a meaningful way we need a group of personalities working within the business. We need finacial, marketing, sales, technical support, inventors and others to make this happen.

The next couple of years we are going to see the introduction of some real good products that will have an impact. But the sad thing is that there will be more good ideas that never get off the ground.
